Description
At meteorological stations, the values of climate elements are measured and observed on a daily basis: sunbathing, air temperature, cloudiness, precipitation, air humidity, air pressure, wind direction and speed and others. On the basis of multi-annual datasets, an image of climate opportunities is created for the area of representativeness of a particular meteorological station or, by using the observation of several stations from a given area, gives an insight into regional climate conditions.
Mean climate parameters, climate normals, give an insight into the climatic characteristics of the area. Comparing climate parameters for different 30-year periods can provide insights into the stability of the climatic conditions of an area or their variability can be an indication of climate change.
In applied climatology, especially for the purpose of designing objects with a longer lifespan, events that rarely occur are of interest. Maps of the minimum and maximum air temperature for the return period of 50 years, the maximum wind speeds for the return period of 50 years and the characteristic snow load are significant parts of the technical regulation relating to the effect of meteorological conditions on buildings.
