Hydrogeological overview map of Lower Saxony 1 : 500 000 - Permeability of near-surface rocks
Description
The map shows the permeability of the near-surface rocks on a scale of 1:500,000.
The rock units of the geological overview map 1:500.000 (GUEK500) have been divided into four permeability groups, which were delimited according to a rough estimation of the effective cavity proportions and using the available information from hydraulic investigations. This assessment is based on the classification of mountain permeability as given by the Hydrogeology Working Group of the State Geological Services in its Hydrogeological Mapping Guide (Grimmelmann et al. 1997). The rough assignment of the permeability coefficients is carried out as follows:
- low permeability corresponds to permeability coefficients of kf < 1*10-5 [m/s],
- average permeability corresponds to the range of permeability coefficients from kf = 1*10-5 [m/s] to kf = 1*10-4 [m/s],
- permeability high corresponds to permeability coefficients of kf > 1*10-4 [m/s] and
- Permeability strongly variable means that the corresponding rock complex has such different properties that it can not be clearly assigned to any group.
The present map was created by re-attributing the contents of the Geological Survey Map of Lower Saxony 1: 500,000 and therefore usually only takes into account a depth range of about 2 m below the surface of the terrain.
