Oxygen and oxygen-binding substances in surface water
Description
Good oxygen management is crucial for good ecological status. Sensitive species of fish or invertebrates disappear quickly with reduced oxygen concentrations. But oversaturation of dissolved oxygen is also undesirable and can be harmful to fish gills. Submerged aquatic plants (especially microweeds) release oxygen to the water during the day through photosynthesis. The more pollution with oxygen-binding substances, the less oxygen in the water.
