MSFD2018 - D5C1: Nutrient concentrations in marine subregion assessment geographic units (2010-2016)

Description

Nutrient concentration (μmol.l-1), composed of nitrogen and phosphorus elements, in the water column is one of the criteria for defining eutrophication under the MSFD (D5C1). The geographical units of assessment in which this criterion is assessed are WFD water bodies between 0 and 1 nautical mile of the baseline, 1/20° grid cells between 1 Mm and 12 Mm and 1/5° grid cells between 12 Mm and the EEZ boundary. The index used to assess the achievement of good environmental status for indicator D5C1_nitrogen elements in coastal areas is the dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentration (NID = NH4 + NO2 + NO3) normalized to 33 salinity, calculated per geographical unit of assessment. In the absence of a threshold for phosphate, there is no D5C1_phosphate elements in the coastal zone. In intermediate and wide zones the index used is the median concentration of nitrate (NO3) and phosphates (PO4), calculated by geographical unit of assessment. The data is presented in the form of georeferenced files of type shp. The criterion of good condition is that the concentrations of nitrogen elements are not at levels indicating adverse effects. Results of the evaluation of criterion D5C1_nitrogen elements: - SRM Channel East North Sea: 99% of the MMN MRS has been assessed and 15% of the total area (i.e. 4384 km2) does not reach the EEB - SRM Celtic Sea: 83% of the CMS has been assessed and 2% of the total area (i.e. 812 km2) does not reach the EEB - SRM Bay of Biscay: 83% of the GdG SRM has been assessed and 0.6% of the total area (i.e. 1089 km2) does not reach the EEB - Western Mediterranean MRS: 96% of the MO MRS has been assessed and less than 0.1% of the total area (i.e. 36 km2) does not reach the EEB Results of the evaluation of criterion D5C1_phosphorus elements: - SRM Channel East North Sea: 91% of the MMN MRS was assessed and 7% of the total area (i.e. 2085 km2) does not reach the EEB - SRM Celtic Sea: 78.5% of the MC MRS was assessed and 100% of the assessed area reached EEB - SRM Bay of Biscay: 80.5% of the GdG SRM has been assessed and 1.2% of the total area (i.e. 2164 km2) does not reach the EEB - Western Mediterranean MRS: 96% of the MO MRS has been assessed and no area reaches the EEB
