The concept of ‘principal activity’ describes the nature of a person’s economic activity. The population is divided into those in the labour force and those outside the labour force on the basis of the main activity. These groups can be further subdivided into sub-groups. The classification is based on information on the person's activities during the last week of the year. The information on the main activity is based on data from different registers. Labour force participation is a priority in the reasoning of the main activity. Within the labour force, on the other hand, the reasoning of the unemployed has been done before the reasoning of the employed.
Information on employment is based on pension insurance data from different registers. Unemployed persons are defined on the basis of the Ministry of Labour's register of jobseekers. The group Others consists of persons who are outside the labour force and also do not belong to the following groups: 0-14 years old, students or schoolchildren, conscripts or non-military servicemen, pensioners.
The employment status describes the position of the employed in working life. Employed persons can be divided into wage and salary earners and entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs cannot be divided into employers and lone entrepreneurs. The group Entrepreneurs also includes those family members who work in the company as non-employees. The information on the occupational status is based on the person's pension insurance data and the amount of salary and entrepreneurial income.
