Description
Four out of five animal species in Austria are insects. They provide, among other things, pollination, pest control, the degradation of organic substances and are the food basis for other animal species. The report gives an overview of species numbers, distribution and stock trends in Austria as well as their importance for us humans. One focus is on the dramatic declines of insect populations worldwide and various risk factors. Previously, only sophisticated, specialized insect species were considered endangered, new evidence suggests that common and widespread species are also affected by a decline. There is a high need for research, in particular on the causes of hazards, but there is sufficient information to implement measures to protect insect diversity.
