Modal split

The modal split is a statistical calculation that describes how traffic is distributed among the various means of transport (on foot, by bike, public transport, or motorized private transport).

Differences are made between

• Total traffic (consists of inland and source/destination traffic as well as through and tangential traffic. In the study Mobility in Cities, only the total traffic of the population of Constance was examined, i.e. no commuters, no visitors, no through traffic),
• Inland traffic (paths that have source and destination within the city) and source/destination traffic (i.e. paths that have either their destination or their source within the city).

The data should be collected every 5 years. The first survey from 1997 was carried out by Socialdata, as was the second survey from 2007. In 2018, the Technical University of Dresden collected the data.
