Fire alleys in the centre of Turku
Description
The fire alleys are a significant part of Turku's urban structure with a scenic and cultural history. After the fire in Turku in 1827, C. L. Engel designed a so-called fire-safe city plan for Turku, in which an area was assigned to the plots on which only stone buildings could be built and on which trees had to be planted in order to prevent the spread of fires, subject to a conditional fine. These areas, also known as garden lands, were drawn in 1867 in a town plan, the so-called garden land plan. The garden land indicated in the local detailed plan was digitised at the beginning of the 21st century. Some of the fire alleys have preserved very old trees.
