Fermentation of manure in biogas plants
Description
Energy sources from (agricultural) residues and waste are part of the measures within Austria's climate and energy policy. Fermentation of manure in biogas plants combines climate protection and resource-conserving farming methods. Methane and nitrous oxide emissions are reduced and contribute to CO2 savings, especially in the agricultural and energy sectors. Fermentable fertilizers from larger livestock farms reduce 2.9% of greenhouse gases in the agricultural sector. The generated biogas contributes to a saving of 155 Gg CO2 in the energy sector. The amount of heat generated of 740 GWh can trigger additional CO2 savings in the small consumers and agriculture sector, depending on the installation. The manures are available free of charge and make plant operators less dependent on price fluctuations of other substrates.
