Description

Smoking is the "first easily preventable cause of death." It is responsible for about 27% of cancer deaths and 32% of overall deaths in the province. 72% of cases of cancer of the oral cavity, pharynx and esophagus and 83% of lung cancers are attributed to smoking. Smoking is also responsible for other diseases, such as myocardial infarction, stroke, chronic obstructive bronchitis and other disorders of the respiratory system. Smoking is widespread in 24.7% of the provincial population between 18 and 69 years of age (28% among men and 21.3% among women).
