Protected areas

Description

The protected area is defined in the Act on the Transport System and Roads (Section 44). An area extending 20 metres from the centre line of the road or, in the case of more than one carriageway, of the nearest carriageway. For special reasons, the distance on the road or section of road specified in the road plan may be reduced by 20 metres or extended to a maximum of 50 metres and a maximum of 300 metres at the emergency landing point belonging to the road and in the longitudinal direction by an extension extending to a distance of 750 metres from each end of the road. You can't keep a building in a safe zone. The Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment has the right to remove vegetation from the protected area if traffic safety so requires and due to the emergency landing site. Building in a protected area requires a decision to derogate in accordance with the Highways Act. As a rule, a protected area is not valid in a local detailed plan area. Information on protected areas is only entered into the road wizard if the normal width (20 metres) measured from the centreline of the nearest roadway has been deviated from. Updating information is continuous. The ELY Centres are responsible for maintaining the information. The target category is versionable and covers roads and ramps.
