Description
The Copernicus thematic portal provides data from the European Earth observation programme Copernicus as well as derived data levels. Sentinel-1 satellites provide images in the C-band radar range, which corresponds to a wavelength of 5.5 cm. Due to the large wavelength and the active transmission of the radar beams, the satellites provide images regardless of the weather and the time of day. As a result, and with a sampling width of 250 km, they are well suited to detect water or flood areas, which is mapped by means of the temporary water areas in the Copernicus portal. Sentinel-2 satellites provide images in the visible and infrared spectrum between 443 nm and 2190 nm. Its 13 channels are optimized for land surface observation. The high resolution of up to 10 m and the scanning width of 290 km are well suited to detect changes in vegetation and, for example, to make crop forecasts, to map forest stands or to determine the growth of wild and crop plants. The instrument is also used on coasts and inland waters, for example to monitor algae growth or to track sediment input into river deltas.
