Engineering Geological Map of Lower Saxony 1 : 500 000
Description
The Engineering Geological Map of Lower Saxony 1 : 500 000 is taken from the Geological Survey Map 1: 500 000 and shows the geological subsoil in general up to 2 m below ground, highlighting the characteristics that are important for the assessment as subsoil. From this point of view, the near-surface geology is summarized in 17 so-called subsoil types for a better overview. Each type of subsoil is described by stratigraphy, petrography and genesis.
From this information, an assignment is made to the soil groups according to DIN 18196 and to the soil classes according to DIN 18300. The soil groups characterize soils according to similar material properties and the soil classes summarize soils from the point of view of recoverability and the state when dissolving. The map scale 1: 500 000 makes it possible to obtain initial information about the ground conditions close to the surface in a given space. Within the framework of state planning and spatial planning or infrastructure planning, such as paths for transport routes, a quick overview of the subsoil in the planning area can be obtained.
The map therefore does not replace ground tests in accordance with DIN 4020.

Notes on the consideration of groundwater conditions in the case of foundations: In addition to the geological conditions or the ground conditions, the local groundwater conditions are important for a planned construction project.
