Checking of baby articles for harmful substances

On behalf of the Federal Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Consumer Protection, the Federal Environment Agency carried out a study in autumn 2009 on the review of baby articles with regard to chemical substances (phthalates, organotin compounds and organophosphorus flame retardants). 3 articles exceeded the legally permitted maximum levels for phthalates. In about half of the articles toxic organotin compounds and organophosphorus flame retardants were detectable. The study shows that market surveillance is always necessary to achieve compliance with the European and Austrian phthalate ban. A regime for certain organotin compounds is being implemented; for organophosphorus flame retardants, a REACH regime should be sought. As a result of the investigation, the phthalate-containing products were withdrawn from the market and the distributors were asked to ensure that their products were free of the other substances found.
