Flooding - Accessibility roads rural area (2018)
Description
In the event of heavy rain, the water on the streets can become so high that certain road sections become impassable for passenger cars, or even for emergency traffic such as ambulances, police and fire brigade. This map shows which roads are only accessible for emergency traffic or no longer accessible at all after an extreme shower of 100 mm in 2 hours.
For this analysis, only the roads of the rural area are taken into account.
Structure
Roads are classified as ‘passable’ (green) if there is a maximum water depth of 10 cm. At water depths between 10 and 30 cm, the roads are classified as ‘passable for emergency traffic’ (yellow). This means that the road is no longer passable for normal traffic. As long as there are steps and no bow wave is created, calamity traffic can make use of the road. In theory, this certainly applies to the vehicles of emergency services that are higher on the wheels. Roads with water depths of 30 cm and above are ‘impassable’ (red). The main access routes are shown thicker.
The modelling includes both the flow over the ground level, as well as the drainage via the sewage system and open water. However, the bottlenecks presented may not always be recognised in practice (to that extent). No rights can be derived from the absolute values. The results give a first indication of the expected degree of impassability of roads in the rural area in the event of extreme precipitation.
