Ticino Park: Area of the biosphere reserve MAB Ticino Valle
Description
The MAB (Man and the Biosphere) programme was launched by UNESCO with the aim of improving the relationship between man and the environment and reducing biodiversity loss and has led to the recognition of the Biosphere Reserves, marine and/or terrestrial areas that Member States undertake to manage with a view to resource conservation and sustainable development, in the full involvement of local communities. In 2002, the Ticino Valley was recognised as the MAB Biosphere Reserve and currently includes an area of almost 150.000 ha, of which about 14.000 ha is classified as core areas, in which the main objective is the conservation of ecosystems and is intended for scientific research, 33.000 ha as buffer areas, which strengthen the protective action of the nearby central areas and more than 100,000 as transition areas. where economic activities are carried out for the improvement of the well-being of local communities.In the context of the WebGIS of the Ticino Park, the classification of the area of the MAB biosphere reserve can be consulted among the levels “MAB Biosphere Reserve”;
