Hydrogeological overview map of Lower Saxony 1 : 200 000 - Groundwater surface location
Description
The position of the groundwater surface, or the groundwater pressure surface with tensioned groundwater, is usually represented by groundwater height equals (isohypses). The map theme shows the groundwater surface for all loose rock areas of Lower Saxony. In the solid rock areas of southern Lower Saxony, this type of representation is not possible, since a spatially coherent groundwater body spread over a large area usually does not exist there. The groundwater moves in the solid rock in gap and fault systems or karst cavities. Although the groundwater deposits in solid rock, e.g. in karst areas, can be quite considerable, they cannot be meaningfully represented with groundwater equivalents. These areas are marked on the map as solid rock, the assumed groundwater flow direction is indicated by arrows.
For the construction of groundwater equals, groundwater level measurements at all measuring points are generally carried out at the same time. Although reference date measurements are available for larger territorial units, they are not available for the whole of Lower Saxony. Therefore, for the present groundwater level plan, groundwater level measurements at different times had to be used, which were converted to mean water level ratios. All measuring points observed within the framework of the regional aquatic survey service were included in the evaluation. In addition to these measuring points in the state service, there are many other measuring points that are observed in the context of waterworks operation, evidence preservation procedures and special programs and were also used for the present map.
In order to make the line representation of the groundwater equals more vivid, the intervening surfaces are colored. The colour areas indicate the position of the groundwater surface or the groundwater pressure area in m to NN.
The groundwater level plan is suitable for clarifying the flow directions and the potential gradient ratios of groundwater in the loose rock areas on a large scale.
