The designation has been implemented in Danish legislation by Order No 408 of 1 May 2007 on the designation and administration of international nature protection areas and the protection of certain species, as amended.
An EC Habitat Area is one of three types of international nature protection area: EC Bird Protection Areas, EC Habitats Areas and Ramsar Areas. The first two are collectively referred to as Natura 2000 sites. The basis for the habitat areas is the 1992 Habitats Directive, which aims to protect and improve the conditions for natural habitats, animals and plants in the EU. Habitat areas are designated to protect and conserve certain natural habitats and species of animals and plants that are of importance to the EU. The habitat types to be protected are those: · At risk of disappearance in their natural range · There is a limited natural range because they have declined or are naturally limited · Characteristics of different areas of Europe The animal and plant species to be conserved are: · Threatened, vulnerable or rare · Only in a less demarcated area (being endemic) and requiring special attention because of their specific habitat and/or the possible consequences that their exploitation may have on their conservation status.
