Photographs and Views of Zurich around 1910
Description
The record contains pictures of the photographer Friedrich Ruef-Hirt (1873-1927). Between 1900 and 1910, it systematically documented all the quarters of the Grosstadt Zurich, which was newly created in 1893. In a few years, a unique collection of pictures of houses and streets was created. An unusual feature in Ruef-Hirt’s photographs is that he photographed mostly “over corner” and that his images in front are labeled uniformly by hand (with street names and quarters). The pictures were available as postcards.
The collections of the **Baugegeschichteliche Archiv (BAZ)** contain more than 1000 postcards by Friedrich Ruef-Hirt. They were donated by his descendants to the city of Zurich at the end of the 1960s. They offer the unique opportunity to reconstrate the city around 1910.
The images are in the public domain because their copyright protection period (70 years after the death of the author) has expired. More than 160'000 photographs of the BAZ can be found online and in an open license on the platform [e-Pics](https://baz.e-pics.ethz.ch/) of the ETH Library.
