Consumers Business and Consumer Research: consumer confidence, economic climate, willingness to buy by households and individuals. (01-01-2021 - 01-01-2022)
Description
In the Consumer Economic Survey (CCO), Statistics Netherlands (CBS) asks people about their views on economic development in the Netherlands and their own financial situation. On the basis of this research, consumer confidence is determined, among other things.

### Methodology
The Consumer Economic Survey (CCO) provides a picture of consumer confidence in the Netherlands. The CCO provides information on consumer perceptions about the general economic situation in the Netherlands and the financial situation of households. The consumer confidence indicator reflects individuals’ views on the overall economic and financial situation of their own household and is composed of 5 components: (1) the general economic situation in the Netherlands in the past and (2) the next 12 months, (3) the financial situation of the household in the past and (4) the next 12 months and whether (5) it is now a favourable time for large purchases. For each question, respondents can find that things are going better (+100), that things are going worse (-100) or that the situation remains the same (0). For each component, a simple sub-indicator can be calculated by subtracting the percentage of negative answers from the percentage of positive answers. Total consumer confidence is then equal to the average of the sub-indicators of the five components. In addition to the consumer confidence indicator, two important sub-indicators are also compiled, the economic climate indicator and the willingness to buy indicator. The economic climate indicator has two components: the economic situation in the past and next 12 months and the willingness-to-buy indicator three components: the financial situation of the household in the past and the next 12 months and whether there is a favourable time for large purchases. The development of the five components and thus all indicators have a clear seasonal pattern. This was corrected in the old design by means of ARIMA-12 and from 2017 this is done by means of a structural time series model. It is this (seasonally) adjusted figure that Statistics Netherlands publishes as the number one consumer confidence indicator.
### Population
From 2017, the CCO will be a person sample instead of an address sample. The target population consists of all persons aged 15 years or older living in the Netherlands who belong to the household nucleus of a private household. This means that the person is registered in the Personal Records Database (BRP), is 15 years or older on the first of the month of the Computer Assisted Web Interviewing (CAWI) observation, and is registered in the household as a single person, partner, parent in a single-parent family or reference person in another household.
