Family network (from 01-01-2009)

Description

This network layer contains all family relationships of individuals who are registered in the Personal Records Database (BRP) on 1 January YYYY. Family relationships include relationships with core family (persons who have a family relationship with each other biologically and/or through adoption, plus persons who have one or more joint children), partners, partners of core family, in-laws (family of the partner) and step family (new partner of parent and any children thereof). This file is based on the KINDOUDERYYYYTABVV (latest version), the GBASAMENWONERSYYYYBUSVV and the GBAVERBINTENISPARTNERYYYJBUSVV. This file is part of a network file set. This network file set also contains the following files: BURENNETWORKYYYYTABVV, COLLEGANETWORKYYYYTABVV, HOUSEGENOTENNETWORKYYYYTABVV and CLASSGENOTENNETWORKYYYTABVV. These files have the same structure. The family network layer based on logical assumptions and available data compiled as well as possible. It contains assumptions, artifacts, and noise. They are suitable for many research purposes, but not for statistics or counts of numbers of relationships. For some research questions, the limitations of the files will be more relevant than for others. Much of the noise is mediated on a large (research) scale. But in all cases it is important that researchers who work with the data take due account of the underlying derivation rules, and if in doubt consult a CBS expert in the field of these networks. More information on how to access the data: > https://www.cbs.nl/en-en/our-services/custom-and-microdata/microdata-self-research ### Methodology The information from the KINDOUDERYYYYTABVV (latest version) is used to derive the core family members (11 types of relationships). The information from the GBASAMENWONERSJJJBUSVV and GBAVERBINTENISPARTNERJJJBUSVV is then used to derive partners (2 types of relationships), in-laws (3 types of relationships), stepfamily (3 types of relationships) and other partners of nuclear family (3 types of relationships). All relationships are mentioned in the code list. Relationships where the partners do not live together are not considered partners in the distraction of the network. This means that some of the affective relationships are missed (e.g. LAT relationships), but also that some of the relationships that have broken down are rightly not taken into account. If married couples or people with a registered partnership do not live together, this indicates in most cases a divorce that has not yet been formally completed. There are logically multiple family relationships possible per RINPERSON, so in the vast majority of cases there will be multiple records per RINPERSON. The family relationships established in this network do not mean that these family members are by definition in contact with each other in practice. After all, it often happens that there is no contact between family members. These relationships can be seen as a reservoir of potential contacts. ### Population This network layer contains all family relationships of individuals who are registered in the BRP on 1 January YYYY. Family relationships include relationships with core family (persons who have a family relationship with each other biologically and/or through adoption, plus persons who have one or more joint children), partners, partners of core family, in-laws (family of the partner) and step family (new partner of parent and any children thereof). This file is not suitable to reproduce official population numbers on 1 January according to Statline. For this purpose, the component GBASTANDPOPULATIONYYYYTABVV should be used.
