Provision of medicinal products at 4 positions ATC code to persons (as of 01-01-2020)

Description

This database contains all supplies of medicines that are reimbursed according to entitlement to pharmaceutical care from the basic health insurance per person. The number of defined daily doses provided (DDD's) per dispensing is also included. The data are taken from the Risk equalisation files of the Zorginstituut Nederland. The benefits are, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) ATC classification (where ATC stands for Anatomical, Therapeutic, Chemical) aggregated at person level by drug groups at 4 positions ATC code. The first position of the ATC code is a letter that stands for the main anatomical group. The combination of this letter with the digits of position two and three gives the code for the therapeutic subgroup. The letter on the 4th position stands for the pharmacological subgroup. The use of this file requires permission from the data provider. This is done through the Health and Care (SGZ) team. Send a message with an analysis plan or (summary of a) research proposal, clearly indicating why the use of the drug data is necessary, to SGZ Data [address hidden - contact CBS]. SGZ will then let you know whether the medicine tab can be used for the study in question. More information on how to access the data: > https://www.cbs.nl/en-en/our-services/custom-and-microdata/microdata-self-research ### Methodology These are integral data, in the first place corrected for erroneously entered records of benefits in kind. In case of incorrect (debit) entry, a corresponding credit record will be created. The relevant credit records and associated debit records have been removed. Furthermore, only medicines whose article code could be assigned to an ATC code were included. Reference data from Z-Index were used for this purpose. The products for which no ATC code was known included pharmacy proprietary codes, codes for magistral preparations, and codes for non-medicinal products such as dressings. The persons to whom the medicines have been supplied concern all persons registered in the BRP at any time during the reference year, i.e. including born, deceased, immigrated and emigrated persons. Until 2010, the file also contains benefits in kind for persons who were registered in the BRP but no longer resided in the Netherlands. However, the impact of this further delimitation of the population is small (approximately 0.1% of the number of benefits in kind). In order to be able to compare figures over the years, this demarcation can be realized by choosing only those persons who were resident in the Netherlands in the relevant year. Occasionally, the ATC coding of drug groups may change. Any changes will be made on January 1st. Data up to 2010 are based on the 2010 ATC format. From the reporting year 2011 onwards, the valid classification in the relevant year shall be used per year. ### Population Benefits in kind reimbursed by the basic insurance, excluding benefits in kind provided by hospitals and nursing homes (Algemene Wet Bijzondere Ziektekosten (AWBZ)/Wet Long-term Care (WLZ)), including benefits in kind provided by outpatient hospital pharmacies and benefits in kind provided to persons in nursing homes. Until 2019 it concerns persons who are registered in the Personal Records Database (BRP) in the statistical year, from 2020 onwards all persons who can be linked to a valid citizen service number (BSN).
