National Cohort Research Education (NCO) The NCO microdata files were compiled by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) for the National Cohort Research Education (NCO). The NCO has been initiated and is funded by the National Educational Research Agency (NRO). For these files, existing register data from the social-statistical files (SSB) of CBS and existing educational records of the Education Basic Register (BRON) of the Education Implementation Service (DUO) have been combined. The files are intended as a backbone and contain only the torque key (RINPERSOON and RINPERSOONS) and the school year in which the pupil entered the cohort. The year in the file name refers to the relevant school year YYYY/YYYY+ 1. More information on how to access the data: > https://www.cbs.nl/nl-nl/onze-diensten/maatwerk-en-microdata/microdata-zelf-onderzoek-doen ### Methodology The files are intended as a backbone and contain only the torque key (RINPERSOON and RINPERSOONS) and the school year in which the pupil entered the cohort. Students appear in multiple cohorts if they have remained seated or if they accelerated. In some cases, students appear to be slowing down. For example, there are some students who are in group 8 in 2010 and in 2011 in group 2. These are probably administrative errors. This has not been corrected. If they stay in group 1, the starting year in both cohorts is equal to the selected cohort. In all other situations, in the cohort in which they started, the starting year corresponds to the cohort year, and that they have a later start year in the cohort in which they enter. Based on the start year, the pupils who were originally started in the respective cohort can be selected. Because the side-influencers are also included, by linking with the educational characteristics, a cross-section of all pupils in a certain grade and school year can be given. ### Population These files contain data of the pupils who are in the first year of primary education in a given school year, supplemented each year with the side-influencers.
