Environmental costs of companies (from 01-01-2012)
Description
Environmental costs and investments of companies provide information on the environmental costs and investments made by companies (with 10 or more employees) and the net environmental burdens of these companies in the mineral extraction, industry, energy supply and water extraction sectors according to the 2008 Standard Business Classification (SBI 2008). Net environmental costs reflect the financial burden on businesses, as a result of environmental care. This microfile contains only the data of the corresponding business units.

### Methodology
The basic data is collected by means of a written (mandatory European regulation) survey of more than 4,000 companies. The survey form contains questions on the costs incurred by companies in relation to waste, waste water, environmental damage, soil remediation, environmental research, environmental coordination, investments in newly installed environmental facilities (added and process-integrated facilities), and plans for environmental facilities that become ready for use in the two years following the year under review. In addition, data that does not come directly from the reporters is used, but is calculated, such as interest rates and depreciation of environmental investments.
For companies not included in the sample and for the non-response, an estimate is made per business group and size class (= per nuclear cell) using an estimator: total = {(total number of employees in company group)/(total number of employees of responding companies)} x (total results of responding companies). For a limited number of companies, it is not statistically justified to follow this procedure. In these cases, individual estimates are made taking into account as much data as possible (including those from previous years’ survey forms).
After increase, raw figures are made for analysis per variable and per nuclear cell. This compares with previous years. Outliers are detected and if necessary improved or plausible. Results are related to figures from other CBS statistics (e.g. environmental investments are related to the total investment of companies). The number of employees and the resulting increase factors are checked.
CBS is bound by confidentiality rules when publishing the results of its investigations. For example, CBS does not disclose any results from which data from individual companies can be derived. This sometimes results in CBS bringing together certain outcomes from different groups of companies or even completely concealing certain figures by giving a &. &.#039;
