Characteristics of AOW benefits (01-01-2006 - 01-01-2013)

Description

This SSB component contains data on benefits under the General Old Age Act (AOW). This component consists of all AOW benefits to persons who are ongoing or influencing at any time in the reporting month. Key features that appear in the file: amount of benefit (full or incomplete), amount of benefit. The AOW is a general, population-wide, compulsory insurance that guarantees people with the AOW pension age an income. In the Dutch social security system, this is a national insurance scheme. In principle, anyone who has not yet reached the AOW age and lives in the Netherlands is insured for the AOW. Persons who do not live in the Netherlands but who are employed in the Netherlands on which payroll tax is paid are also insured. Each year the person is insured, he/she accumulates 2 % AOW pension. The person receives a full AOW pension if he/she has always been insured in the 50 years before his AOW pension age. For example: if the AOW age is 65 years and 1 month, the person builds up AOW pension between the 15th birthday and 1 month and the 65th birthday and 1 month. If the AOW age is 66 years old, the person builds up AOW pension between the 16th and 66th birthdays. For periods of residence abroad, he/she may insure against loss of entitlement to an AOW benefit. A benefit can be transferred abroad within the framework of the Act on Export Benefits (Law BEU).
