Benefits in kind of medicinal products at 4 positions ATC code to persons (01-01-2006-01-01-2020)

Description

This file contains the data of all medicines that have been reimbursed according to entitlement to pharmaceutical care under the basic health insurance scheme to persons registered in the Basic Persons Register (BRP) in the statistical year. The data comes from the Risicoverevenings files of the Zorginstituut Nederland. The benefits in kind are, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) ATC classification (where ATC stands for Anatomical, Therapeutic, Chemical) aggregated at person level to drug groups at 4 positions ATC code. The first position of the ATC code is a letter representing the main anatomical group. The combination of this letter with the numbers of position two and three gives the code for the therapeutic subgroup. The letter at the 4th position stands for the pharmacological subgroup. The use of this file requires permission from the data provider. This is done through the Health and Care team (SGZ). For this purpose, send a message with an analysis plan or (summary of a) research proposal, clearly indicating why the use of the drug data is necessary, to SGZ Data [mail address hidden – contact CBS]. SGZ will then let you know if the drug tab can be used for the study in question. In case of erroneous (debit)ingave, a corresponding credit record is created. The relevant credit records and corresponding debit records have been removed. Furthermore, only medicines whose article code could be assigned to an ATC code were included. Reference data from Z-Index was used for this purpose. The products of which no ATC code was known included pharmacy-own codes, codes for magistral preparations, and codes of non-medicinal products such as bandages. The persons to whom the medicinal products have been provided concern all persons enrolled in the BRP at any time during the reference year, i.e. including born, deceased, immigrated and emigrated. Until 2010, the file also includes benefits in kind to persons who were registered in the BRP but were no longer resident in the Netherlands. However, the impact of this further delimitation of the population is small (approximately 0.1 % of the number of benefits in kind). In order to be able to compare figures for the years in question, this delimitation can be realised by choosing only those persons who were resident in the Netherlands in the year in question. Occasionally, the ATC encoding of drug groups may change. Any changes will always be made on January 1st. The data up to 2010 are based on the 2010 ATC format. As from reporting year 2011, the valid classification in the relevant year shall be used per year. ### Population Provision of medicinal products covered by basic insurance, excluding benefits in kind provided by hospitals and nursing homes (AWBZ), including benefits in kind provided by outpatient hospital pharmacies and benefits in kind to persons in nursing homes.
