Non-natural causes of death of residents of the Netherlands (from 01-01-1996)

Description

This file contains information on persons who died of a non-natural cause of death and who were registered in the Municipal Basic Administration (GBA) at the time of their death. The data are broken down by suicide, murder and manslaughter, road deaths, fatal business and private accidents and other or unknown cases. More information on how to access the data: > https://www.cbs.nl/nl-nl/onze-diensten/maatwerk-en-microdata/microdata-zelf-onderzoek-doen ### Methodology For every deceased resident of the Netherlands, the doctor (the attending physician, his observer or the municipal coroner) fills in a certificate of death (B-declaration). This cause of death is sent to the CBS medical officer in a closed envelope via the municipality where the death occurred. At CBS, the envelopes are opened and the forms are processed. This happens completely anonymously, the name of the deceased is not known to CBS. From the Dutch municipalities CBS receives death reports about deceased persons registered in the GBA. This data is linked to the cause of death, so that background data of the deceased are known. At the district parquets, files relating to non-natural deaths are collected on the basis of questionnaires. From Rijkswaterstaat (Water Traffic and Environment) from the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment a file relating to road deaths is obtained, from the Labour Inspectorate a file relating to occupational accidents and from the police suicide forms. The data from the cause of death and the DPA are compared with the data from the district parquets and external services and adjusted where necessary. In euthanasia, the disease for which euthanasia has been performed is encoded as the primary cause of death. Euthanasia is therefore not a non-natural death, but is counted as a natural death. ### Population Deceased persons who were registered in the Municipal BasisAsministration (GBA) at the time of death and died of a non-natural death
