Maximum theoretical TFA entry from wastewater-based medicinal products for human use per district or district-free city (dataset)
Description
For the very persistent and very mobile connection trifluoroacetate (TFA), the theoretical TFA levy from municipal wastewater treatment plants per district is presented. These were established in the framework of the opinion “Trifluoroacetate (TFA): Creating the foundations for effective minimisation – Spatial analysis of the entry paths into the water cycle” (Runtime: August 2021-November 2022). Since potential precursors of TFA are present in wastewater, municipal wastewater treatment plants are a source of TFA in the aquatic environment. Potential precursors include, among other things, some medicines and biocides, as well as the transformation products of these substances. The release of TFA from precursor substances can be biological, abiotic (e.g. ozone in drinking water treatment and wastewater treatment) or photochemical in the water phase. TFA can be formed both during wastewater treatment and only later in the environment, i.e. after discharge of the treated wastewater into the receiving water body. Due to the comparatively high stability of many TFA precursors found in wastewater, it can be assumed that their stay in rivers (defined as the period between the input of the precursor substance via the wastewater into the predators and the entry into the sea) in Germany is too low to be completely dismantled or converted into TFA. Further details can be found in the report. In conclusion, there is evidence that municipal wastewater treatment plants are not a main entry pathway for TFA and that their impact on the concentrations in rivers is rather low.
