Wild bee paradise Austria?
Description
Wild bees are essential for pollination of cultivated and wild plants. There are about 690 species of wild bees in Austria. The main causes of their vulnerability are habitat loss and intensification of agricultural land use. Extensive use and the renunciation of fertilization and herbicides promote the flowering plant density and thus the food supply. The extensification of originally intensively used areas has a positive effect on wild bee diversity. Ideal habitats for wild bees are characterized by flower and small structures, such as extensively used meadows or wild herb-rich field margins. Since the pollination performance for cultivated areas decreases with increasing distance to extensively used meadows, a small-scale landscape mosaic has a positive effect on a nationwide pollination performance.
