Houtsingel area Westerwolde
Description
This stock contains the wooding areas that are located in Westerwolde, a region in the province of Groningen.
Wood rings, alder rings, hawthorn hedges and woodwalls are lined plantings with trees and/or shrubs. In wood rings the composition of trees is varied, alder ringels consist mainly of alder and hawthorn hedges from hawthorns. These elements often form boundaries of parcels or are separations with a different function, originally mostly as a livestock shelter. Roughly two types can be distinguished: plants on an artificial earthy shore (wood roll) and plants at the same height as the surrounding land (wood-singel).
Characteristic of Westerwolde is the private wooding structure and the pingoruins present in it. The wood rings are under pressure due to scaling up in agriculture and the lack of adequate maintenance. The pingoruins threaten to lose their value by, among other things, ploughing, levelling and sliding off the ground.
The landscape of Westerwolde is characterised by the variety of closed and small-scale open areas with esge hamlets. The current small-scale open and private character is protected by the preservation of the many plantings along plot boundaries in the form of wood rings and bushes.
