Accumulation of pressures that can cause the entry of pathogens into the North Atlantic Demarcation (EM NOR PRE Pathogens)
Description
The joint analysis of pressures that may facilitate the entry of pathogens into the sea has considered wastewater discharges, aquaculture facilities and mollusc farming areas, bathing areas and rivers (which may also provide wastewater loads). Ballast water has not been included in this analysis.
To identify areas of potential pathogen entry, an index has been developed based on the following criteria, applied on a mesh of 5 x 5 minutes:
- Presence of a sewage treatment plant within 5 km
- Presence of an aquaculture facility or mollusc area
- Presence of the mouth of a river less than 2 km
- Presence of a bathing area less than 500 m
Each factor is assigned a value of 1, double scoring the treatment plants that have an obligation to report to the State Registry of Emissions and Pollutant Sources. They've finally joined in.
Areas of high pathogen entry potential have been selected from cells classified by the “Very High” range and areas of moderate pathogen entry potential from cells classified by the “High” range:
Very High: 6 / High: 5 / Medium: 3 to 4 / Low: 1 to 2 / Very Low: 0
