Infrared aerial images — Digital CIR orthophotos of the city of Braunschweig from the 2008 photo flight
Description
In a digital flight on 8 May 2008, hundreds of individual images were taken vertically from an aircraft. The high-resolution images with 10 cm of ground pixels were digitally equalised and precisely assembled using GPS data. Parallel to the images in real colors (RGB), so-called false color or infrared images (CIR) were taken simultaneously via special infrared channels of the aerial camera during the flight. Such recordings are used in environmental planning. For example, the state of vitality of trees from the pictures can be interpreted. The chlorophyll of the leaves reflects the infrared radiation to an increased degree. This effect makes the otherwise dark green leaves appear in light red.
