Source of data: - The lists of legally protected biotopes communicated by the lower nature conservation authorities (UNB) to the Saxon State Office for the Environment, Agriculture and Geology (LfULG). Many natural and semi-natural biotopes are rare and endangered today. For this reason, Section 30 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act lists biotope types that are to be protected by law throughout Germany. The Länder can add to this what has happened for Saxony with Section 21 of the Saxon Nature Conservation Act. Legal protection applies immediately if a biotope is in the required condition. The nature conservation authorities in Saxony keep lists of the legally protected biotopes known to them in accordance with the provisions of the Federal or Saxon Nature Conservation Act. For legal protection, however, it is not necessary for a biotope to be listed in a directory or database. Other legally protected biotopes not listed in the biotope directories may exist. On the other hand, known biotopes can also lose their legally protected character as a result of natural development. The source of the biotope inventories are mainly the technical data of the LfULG, in particular the biotope data from the FFH monitoring, the results of the forest biotope mapping of the SBS as well as own surveys of the lower nature conservation authorities. The LFULG documents the biotope inventories of the lower nature conservation authorities nationwide and updates the database annually as far as the UNB communicates changes.
