Ecoregions

This dataset aims to be a follow-up to the first demarcation of the ecodistricts, which was drawn up by the Institute for Nature Conservation and included in the Structuurplan Vlaanderen, subfacet Open Ruimte (1993). In order to draw up a concept for a refined ecological classification in Flanders, reference was made to the theoretically elaborated example of the Netherlands. The theory gives an accurate description of the ecological hierarchical levels. Moreover, the context of Dutch ecology is quite graphic as an example for a Flemish classification. An unambiguous definition for ecodistricts was used, which was later adapted to the Flemish context (the ecological situation on the one hand and the availability of area-wide or non-area-wide information on the other).
