Description
Biogenic waste, sewage sludge and meat-and-bone meal contain high nutrient loads, in particular nitrogen and phosphorus. These should be managed as efficiently and environmentally friendly as possible. The report describes which treatment methods and recovery routes are most efficient and how the nutrients contained in the waste can be used in the best possible way, while minimising the environmental impact. It also contains detailed recommendations for the use of appropriate treatment and recovery operations and for adapting legal requirements to conserve resources. Literature research and surveys at selected compost and sewage treatment plants and farmers provide insight into the practice of recycling compost and sewage sludge.
