Description: The TiroLernApp is a web application aimed at promoting geographic knowledge and getting to know the province of Tyrol. The game principle is as follows: On the user's screen, a question appears as to where a certain object (municipality, lake, mountain) of the province of Tyrol is located.
For example, for a municipality, such a question is: "Where is Wattens?" or for a mountain: Where is Mount Crossjoch? On a map with a focus on Tyrol, three possible locations are then displayed using pictograms, one of which stands for the right solution to the question. The questions are randomly selected from the questionnaire and visually displayed on the map by different pictograms. Such pictograms symbolize communities, mountains or lakes. The user now has the option to mark one of the pictograms by mouse or touch event, whereupon he receives visual feedback regarding correct or wrong answer. Then another question appears.
The questionnaire consists of the municipalities of Tyrol, which were taken from the data set "Addresses of Tyrol". The datasets for mountains and lakes of Tyrol were taken from Wikipedia and are used to make the game more varied. The questionnaire currently includes 266 questions on municipalities, 29 on mountains and 15 on lakes.
The application contains two modes that are selectable at the beginning of the game. In the first mode, called "game mode", the player has the opportunity to collect points and register in a leaderboard. Here, the user can collect points for correct answers and receives five attempts per game (Edelweiß). In the case of incorrect answers, one attempt is deducted. After the consumption of all five attempts, a dialog appears in which he can enter his nickname, which is then entered in the ranking with points achieved. The leaderboard can be accessed at any time and can be seen as a motivation for further games.
The second mode, called "Info Mode", is aimed at getting to know communities, lakes and mountains. In this mode, info texts or images for the respective objects are displayed after each question; It is not possible to collect points or enter them in the ranking list. The info texts show the first paragraph from the Wikipedia article, under which the searched object is linked. The info texts or images are obtained programmatically via JavaScript via the Wikipedia API.
