Sensitivity to shrinkage and swelling of soil and subsoil (2024)
Description
The sensitivity map (version 1, 2024) shows the sensitivity of the Flemish soil and subsoil to 5m depth for shrinkage and swelling phenomena with changing moisture content. The focus was placed on the top 5 meters of the subsurface, as this is the zone to where deep moisture extraction through the root system of trees can reach, or where, for example, a ventilated crawler basement can cause dehydration. The 3D models on which this map is based give an exploratory indication of which geological layers can be expected at a certain location. The sensitivity map is supported by field data, literature, soil samples and laboratory tests. She gives a, at the moment, best indication of the modeled sensitivity. The sensitivity map should be seen as a tool on the basis of which additional measures can be taken. Every use of the card requires a thorough and critical interpretation. In order to be able to make a decision about a specific location, additional soil research at parcel level is always required. The map is part of the research results of the study OMG_VPO_2021_002 commissioned by the Environment Department. The accompanying report provides more explanations, measures and guidelines.
