Brominated flame retardants in the environment
Description
The Federal Environment Agency has randomly examined the flame retardants tetrabromobisphenol A, hexabromocyclododecane, decabromodiphenyl ethane, 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxyl)ethane and hexabromobenzene in fish, soil and sewage sludge. The presence of these five substances is still insufficiently researched in the environment. The substances are added to plastics, textiles or electrical appliances in order to reduce their flammability. During production, use or disposal, these substances can enter the environment and subsequently accumulate in the food chain and in humans. The fish and soil samples showed low concentrations of the brominated flame retardants. The sewage sludge samples were loaded with all five active substances. The concentrations are comparable to international results.
