Lower Saxony Soil Moisture Information Service - Daily updated water content of soils in Lower Saxony as % of usable field capacity (%nFK) (WMS Service)

Description

The Lower Saxony Soil Moisture Information Service (NIBOFID) of the LBEG shows the current water content for all soils in Lower Saxony. In addition, the course of the soil water content for the last 10 days can be retrieved. Soil moisture is expressed as a percentage of usable field capacity (%nFK). The nFK describes the amount of water that a soil can store at maximum plant availability. The values of the soil moisture monitor are calculated and not measured. The calculation is carried out with the soil water balance model BOWAB and is carried out daily with climate parameters (precipitation, temperature, wind, global radiation and relative humidity) of the previous day. Specific parameters are derived for the respective land use (arable land, grassland, deciduous forest, coniferous forest, other) and the soil. BOWAB uses the high-resolution soil data of the soil map 1:50,000 (BK50) of Lower Saxony and derives soil water characteristic values, such as nFK, FK etc. The calculation is made for the areas of the BK50. The influence of groundwater is taken into account in the form of capillary rise and by the groundwater level from the BK50. A soil moisture content of 100 %nFK indicates that the soil water reservoir is filled. At values above 100 %, leachate is produced or groundwater is located within the soil layer under consideration. Values below 100 %nFK indicate that the plants have extracted soil water and the soil is gradually drying out. From soil moisture levels below 40 - 50 %nFK, plants react to drought and reduce their evaporation. For values of < 30 % nFK, dry stress can be assumed. The map shows the soil moisture for the soil from 0 - 60 cm depth, which corresponds to the main root space for most soils and uses. Location-related information is provided by a maptip. Clicking on a location displays the current soil water content for the main root space in %nFK. In addition, further information can be accessed on the detail page. The graph shows the course of the average soil moisture for the last 10 days for the depth ranges 0 - 30 cm (surface), 0 - 60 cm (main root space) and, if the soil is thicker, 0 - 90 cm (total viewing depth). In addition, the amount of leachate below 90 cm depth is given for the site under consideration. If you need even more detailed information on the water content for your soil with a specific crop (wheat, maize, grassland), please use the specialist application "soil water balance" in the NIBIS® map server. It offers the possibility to determine the course of soil moisture for individual or several areas over a longer period of time with different crop rotations (e.g. 1 year or longer).
