Water retention areas of agri-environment-climate measures (AUKM)
Description
Support for the agri-environmental measure for water retention in the countryside, Part II C of the Directive on the promotion of agri-environment-climate measures to improve climate action and water quality on agricultural land of 24 January 2023.
The purpose of the support is to restore, create and provide water retention areas along or within designated watersheds (e.g. on agricultural land in drainage trench catchments). Floods can spread and accumulate on the water retention areas, precipitation water can be temporarily stored in the soil and groundwater regeneration can be supported by slower area runoff. The aim of water retention is to keep as much water in the area as possible for as long as possible in order to avoid the occurrence of low- and high-water events and to reduce their effects. The water retention areas thus make an important contribution to the adaptation of agriculture to climate change, in particular with regard to changing precipitation events and increasing dry periods (low water prevention).
