Crop rotation areas

Description

Crop rotation areas (FFF) are the most suitable arable cropland for agricultural use. They include arable land, artificial meadows in rotation and arable natural meadows. In the 1992 FFF sectoral plan, the Federal Council defined the minimum amount of FFF for Switzerland as a whole (450,000 ha) and the allocation to the cantons. The minimum volume of FFF to be secured by the Canton of Aargau is 40,000 ha. The FFF sectoral plan aims at food security in times of emergency and the protection of natural resources in general. It is important that the FFF is not the current management or use of the soils concerned, but the agricultural potential for arable use. The proof of FFF in the canton of Aargau is based on the agricultural aptitude card (EK) of the canton of Aargau. On the basis of the EC, the crop rotation areas are classified in FFF1 and FFF2. The FFF1 is very good and well-suited arable land. FFF2 refers to areas that are arable but meet the high requirements only to a limited extent. The crop rotation areas shown are gross areas. This also includes the areas occupied by field trees, hedges, roads, paths, buildings, courtyards, intensive fruit plants, streams, canals, embankments, water distance, forest distance, residual areas, etc. These areas must be deducted from the gross areas in order to obtain the effectively usable crop rotation areas (net areas). The area deductions are determined as a percentage of the measured gross area on a community-specific basis. The total cantonal deduction is 15.7%.
