Description
In 2018, around 79.0 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent were emitted in Austria. As a result, emissions were around 0.6% higher than in 1990. Compared to the previous year 2017, greenhouse gas emissions fell by 3.7%. The main reasons for the decline were the maintenance-related decommissioning of a large blast furnace and lower electricity generation from natural gas. The non-ETS sectors emitted 50.5 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2018. These greenhouse gas emissions were thus 1.6 million tonnes higher than the national emission ceiling for 2018. However, compliance with the national target by 2020 is still likely, as unused emission allowances from previous years are available. Consistent emission reductions in all sectors are essential for the 2030 and 2050 climate targets.
