Seismic subsoil classes A-E (Note card)

Description

The map shows the zones of the different building ground classes (BGK) specified according to the current building standard SIA 261. The classes are characterized according to SIA 261 as follows: A: Hard rock or soft rock under a maximum of 5 m loose rock cover C: Deposits of normally consolidated and uncemented gravel and sand and/or moraine material with a thickness exceeding 30 m D: Deposits of unconsolidated fine sand, silt and clay with a thickness exceeding 30 m E: Alluvial surface layer of subsoil classes C or D with a thickness between 5 and 30 m above a stiffer layer of subsoil classes A or B F2: Risk of slipping during earthquakes shall be tested (separate data set; see instructions for use) (Classes B and F1 were not eliminated anywhere in the Canton of Aargau). Areas of the BGK A are located in the canton of Aargau mainly in hilly areas of the Jura and the Mittelland. Due to the comparatively high shear strengths of solid rocks, they exhibit a rather favourable behaviour during earthquakes. Areas of BGK C can be found in large areas of the Canton of Aargau. These are mostly coarse-grained deposits (gravel and sand), in particular the current river valleys eroded by the glaciers. Areas of the BGK D are partly upstream of the large lakes and can be found in the heavily over-deep valleys eroded by the glaciers. These are fine-grained sediments (fine sand, silt and clay). In these areas, earthquakes are expected to have a greater impact than in areas of the BGK C. Areas of the BGK E occur in large areas of the canton of Aargau. The BGK E is a collection class of all areas of medium loose rock cover. In addition, in case of doubt, areas were assigned to BGK E rather than C or D. The BGK A to E are excreted nationwide. They are assigned elastic response spectra with horizontal acceleration in accordance with construction standard SIA 261. The elastic response spectra are used to dimension supporting structures.
