In the present case, the concept of region is the regional administrative division which comprises several departments, and which was defined as a territorial collectivity by the decentralisation law of 2 March 1982.
This entity also covers regions with special status such as the Ile-de-France region, Corsica or the overseas regions.
Like the department, the region can be considered hybrid since it has at its head, an elected president and assembly, as well as a regional prefect.
In order to better respond to some of their needs which are common to other local and regional authorities and which often go beyond the scope and capacities of a regional entity, regions may join one or more inter-territorial institutions to each of which they will delegate one or more powers in order to pool the means necessary to achieve their objectives.
The list of administrative regions is the responsibility of INSEE.
