The difference in total pension by salary and length of service among employed pensioners

For people with a career between 35 and 39 years and a supplementary pension, the average total pension for men and women in the final salary bracket amounts to €3.585 and €3.301, respectively, i.e. a gender pension gap of 8% (€284). This pension gap is the largest compared to other salary bands. It is observed that the amounts of the total pension, as well as the pension gap, increase with the average wage. The total pension is the sum of the statutory pension and the supplementary pension (converted into a notional pension). It is therefore possible to see the relative importance of these two components in the total pension amount for each gender and length of career, as shown in the following graph. The figures displayed and the analyses relate only to the population with a supplementary pension here. For the lowest salaries, the share of the supplementary pension in the total pension amount remains relatively low. However, it is precisely in this income bracket that the supplementary pension helps to reduce the gender pension gap. As the salary increases, the supplementary pension takes a larger share of the total pension, especially for men in the highest salary brackets. This has the effect of further widening the gender pension gap in these higher wage brackets. The median total pension amount serves to neutralise the effect of abnormally high or low pensions. For example, 50% of women with an average salary between 3000 and 3500 € for the population with a supplementary pension have a total pension amount less than 1808 €, while the remaining 50% have a higher amount. For men in this category, this amount is €1,867, resulting in a median pension gap of 3%.
