General study area INTEMARES Canal de Menorca (LIC ESZZ16002)

Description

The information contained in this data set constitutes the area where the study and work of the INTEMARES Project for the Menorca Canal (LIC ESZZ16002) are concentrated. Therefore, it coincides with the spatial representation of the Place of Community Importance (SCI) of the Menorca Canal (SCI ESZZ16002). It is also the target area of the INTEMARES-CUEVAS campaigns that have been carried out in the context of action C14 of the project focused on the impact of recreational diving activities on habitat 8330 "Submerged and semi-submerged caves". The campaigns include prospecting trips to evaluate the activity of the diving centers and trips to the sea to carry out the methodology of monitoring the selected caves. The area comprising the data provided covers an area of approximately 3353 km2 which lies approximately between 3o05' and 4o13' East and 39o32' and 40o10' North in the Western Mediterranean. The caves in which the study is focused are located on the Menorcan coast within the limits of the LIC occupying a much smaller area than that of the protection figure. This is a data set composed of a single polygonal element representing the surface area of the SCI targeted by the study. The object has associated a series of alphanumeric variables such as the name of the study area, the organism, the area in m2, the maximum and minimum depths, and, finally, a description and observations of the layer. The delimitation of this space and the elaboration of this set of geographical information corresponds to the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITERD). The geographical information collected is stored in a spatial database. The INTEMARES campaigns and sampling carried out within this area have been financed thanks to the LIFE IP INTEMARES Project (LIFE-IP INTEMARES - Integrated, Innovative and Participatory Management for N2000 network in the Marine Environment - LIFE15 IPE/ES/000012). This integrated project has the challenge of laying the foundations to effectively manage the marine areas of the Natura 2000 Network and complete the work and progress promoted within the framework of the LIFE + INDEMARES project, which managed to take a great step in terms of declaring new areas.
