Protected areas: animal and plant health areas
Description
It is possible to protect, for example, breeding birds or seal colonies by forming “Animal and phytosanitary areas” and then prohibiting access to an area during some of the months of the year (Chapter 7, Section 12 of the Environmental Code).
Most of the more than 1,000 animal welfare areas that exist today are located on coasts or inland lakes and have been created to protect seabirds or seals.
Within nature reserves and national parks, decisions on access bans can instead be created.
