The Schmitt map of south-western Germany covers the territories of Salzburg, Bavaria, part of the Palatinate, Württemberg, Baden and Hesse-Nassau on 198 sheets.
The map was created under the direction of the Austrian Major General Heinrich von Schmitt, who at that time headed the Imperial and Royal Quartermaster General Staff.
This map, which serves exclusively military purposes, is directed westwards against the advancing opponent.
The originals and multicolour reproductions in the approximate format of 65 x 45 cm have a scale of approximately 1 : 57 600.
Although graphical triangulations and a measuring table recording were already carried out during the map acquisition, the Schmitt map is not a scientifically exact topographical country image due to the lack of a higher-level trigonometric network.
