Geotopes represent earth-historical formations of inanimate nature, which convey knowledge about the development or previous life on earth. Geotopes include rocks, fossils, landforms and spring formations. Geotopes of the same genesis are grouped into geotope types. Legally protected are those geotopes that are characterized by their special geological significance, rarity or peculiarity. They are of particular value for science, research and teaching. They can be clearly distinguished from the environment due to their special characteristics.
