Surface Water Quality Indicators: Nitrate content of agricultural origin (2020)
Description
Water pollution by nitrates is in certain circumstances caused by intensive agricultural production, the most important diffuse source being the excessive or inadequate application of nitrogen fertilizers in agriculture. This type of pollution has been controlled for years with the publication of Directive 91/676/EEC (Nitrates Directive) and its transposition into Spanish territory of Royal Decree 261/1996. The latter legal instrument is now repealed following the adoption of Royal Decree 47/2022, which establishes the necessary measures to reduce pollution of inland surface waters and groundwater caused by nitrates from agricultural sources. The indicator has been calculated for all inland surface water typologies
The current RD 47/2022 has been used to evaluate the data recorded from 2020 onwards, which establishes new limits for affected waters of 37.5 mg/l of NO3/l in groundwater and 25 mg/l of NO3/l in surface water.
